It was announced today that two of the best companies in the world, Google and AT&T, are merging. AT&T may not have much in the way of a direct competitor to Google these days, but it certainly does have an anti-Google competitor.
AT&T and Google have agreed to merge their respective corporate headquarters in the same building, which will allow for better collaboration. The new complex, which will be a few blocks from Google's current headquarters, will also have better broadband connections, apparently, and will be able to better accommodate the needs of the two companies' employees.
It's no secret that Google and AT&T are competitors, but a merger between the two companies is something many people might have never considered. Both companies have been working to increase bandwidth and data use, and both are attempting to make inroads into the video-streaming business.
People often say that the US is the most tech-savvy country in the world. If you think about it, though, it doesn't make sense. Most people have cell phones, but only a small fraction of those cell phone owners actually use them to make phone calls. Most of us have broadband, but very few of us actually watch movies on it.
Perhaps the most surprising fact about the US is how much cable TV we have. According to the latest data from the Federal Communications Commission, the US has a cable penetration rate of 102.7 percent, making it the most cable-crazed nation on the planet. If you're one of the roughly 20 percent of Americans who don't have cable, you're probably one of the last people in the developed world to get an Internet connection.
It seems like the US gets most of the credit for being the richest and most technologically advanced country in the world, but we have a serious problem that we're completely ignoring. We're just not using the Internet enough.
When Google's Chrome OS was announced, many people were skeptical that it could replace Windows PCs. There's no question that Chrome OS can run a browser (including Google's own), but it has a lot of quirks and a lot of things it doesn't do well. But what if the Chrome OS took over Windows itself?
That's exactly what Google is trying to do with Chrome OS.
