Download the latest version of your operating system, or the OS for which you have the development tools installed, and install the development tools. If you're not sure which version of your OS you have, look on the box or in the manual.
If you have MPASM, download the MPASM compiler from here. It's a GUI version of MPASM, so just download it and it will be installed for you. If you prefer, you can use the command-line version - this page has some information about what's new in version 0.97.5
The instructions are pretty simple, so if you're not using MPLAB, then you'll need to substitute the MPLAB bits with your own versions. The latest version of MPLAB can be downloaded from here .
The first step is to install the latest version of MPLAB X, which will install the XC compilers. If you've downloaded the 0.x versions, make sure that you use the 0.x versions (they work, unlike the 1.x).
The instructions here are pretty simple. If you have the 0.x versions, then you shouldn't have to change anything, but if you have the version 1.x versions then you'll need to change the filename of the.chl file. You can find the filename for the highlighter in the description of the download page.
Setting up the PIC18F series is similar to setting up any other PIC. If you're using a programmer, you can download the PIC18F toolchain from here. Just get the one for the version of the PIC you have (PIC18F13xx for the 1310 and up, PIC16F17xx for the 16F and 18F series, etc). Again, if you want the programmer and software without having to pay, you can download the toolchain from here, again, to the version of the PIC you have. (If you want to use the programmer under MSWindows, you need to have the XC toolchain and the AVRtoolchain.)
