true if there is a marked lane nearby and/or adjacent to the bridge. The lane vehicles are usually positioned on the central access lane, on the approach or exit lanes, or the 3rd or 4th lane. For new bridges with access lanes a designator may be used. The rating vehicle should be positioned on the central access lane when this is not marked (if there is no central access lane) or on the designator. In all cases the vehicle should be positioned so that it is the first vehicle on the bridge. It is best not to position the vehicle in the middle of the lanes since all vehicles must keep their distance from the bridge abutments. When the bridge is marked for both carriageways, the rating vehicle should be positioned on the approach or exit lane. In this case the vehicle should not be too close to the bridge abutments. A four lane bridge may be marked as two two lane approach lanes and two two lane exit lanes. This can provide sufficient position space for the rating vehicle. When a bridge is marked as a single lane approach or exit the rating vehicle should be positioned on the central access lane. In most cases the central access lane is the first or last lane. If it is not, the vehicle should be positioned to give the maximum effect, ideally to the centre line. For divided carriageway bridges the rating vehicle should be positioned on the carriageway that is most frequently used by the intended load. This may not be a designated lane, but one that is obviously more used than the other. In this case the difference in load should be considered, where the appropriate loading should be used. In the case of bus lanes, the rating vehicle should be positioned on the side most frequently used by the intended load. In the case of shared carriageways, the rating vehicle should be positioned on the carriageway that has the worst possible loading. In most cases this will be the side of the bridge most frequently used. This is not a designator, but the centre line is usually close to the centre of a shared carriageway. Similarly for any road with no markings, the rating vehicle should be positioned on the most heavily used lane. This can be a designator or not. As the rating vehicle is usually positioned on the central access lane, the central lane is usually the most heavily used lane and should be used.
