We love the old-school shows and cartoons (that my husband and I watched growing up) that have been brought back in all their glory. We love watching them with our girls, they always seem to be their favorite. And I am SUPER, DUPER excited to announce that The Powerpuff Girls (from Cartoon Network) are now on Hulu! All classic episodes are now available to stream. Do you remember it? I would watch it with while I babysat my younger brother and sister and loved it.

This movie rocks... so hard. Not in a teenage boy "XXX" kinda way, or in a preteen girl "Barbie" and/or *NSync kind way... but in a Cinematic, Fun Time at the Movies kinda way.The cartoon is cute enough, and the writing is always sharp, with little in-jokes or puns thrown in... but how often do grown-ups watch Cartoon Network, anyway? (not often enough, I tell you!)The film is storyboarded within an inch of its life... each little dramatic beat during the opening credits and up to the girls first day of school is hysterical. Things start to lag again once Mojo Jojo is thrown into the mix, however...Jojo's trademark repetitive speech seems to have been toned down a bit, unfortunately, as he only occasionally breaks into those spiral Yoda-on-drugs monologues that are so fun to listen to. ("I will now speak the words that I must be speaking to you, for these are the words I will speak until they are spoken..." or whatever). This is a minor complaint. The girls have to have an arch-nemesis, and to throw Mojo Jojo into the mix (voice of Roger L. Jackson-- a genius) is the best possible choice, like when Batman fought the Joker in the original Tim Burton classic. All other villains pale by comparison."PPG" doesn't talk down to kids, nor does it make adults feel like they've wasted their time sitting through this-- like just about every Disney film has that I've seen in the last 2 years. Too bad it didn't get marketed like a real movie.... many people are missing a real treat. Here's hoping the girls never grow up.... but if they do, I hope I marry one like Buttercup. She kicks butt.10/10
1st watched 7/5/2002 - 6 out of 10(Dir-Craig McCracken): Different and interesting animated movie based on the cult-like girl-followed popular television show on the cartoon network. The movie is the story of how they came to be and how they decided to fight crime and evil in Townsville after their first harmless kindergarten game of tag destroyed the town. There is a good message behind this silly superhero story despite the much-publicized violent content. Yes, there is violent content and the evil that they face is `very' evil, but you can't help but love the well-intentioned `Professor' trying to be a parent to these over-achiever kindergartner's and his attempt to make them good little girls made of sugar, and spice and everything nice despite their super-human strengh. Bravo for this very un-Disney like entry by the Cartoon Network!!
This film shows us the origins of the Powerpuff Girls in more detail than the explanation that appeared before each episode of the television series. For those who haven't watched the series: Professor Utonium is determined to do something his crime-ridden hometown of Townsville. To that end he mixes 'sugar and spice and all things nice'; to this blend 'Ingredient X' is accidentally added by Jojo, his chimpanzee. This mix creates three delightful little girls who he names Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup... these aren't ordinary girls though; they have superpowers! The next day they start attending school and all goes well until they are introduced to the game of tag; the way they play leaves both their school and the city in ruins! They are forbidden from using their powers and after the Professor is arrested they meet up with Jojo, who has been effected by Ingredient X, he says he can help them be liked again if they help him with his plan to help Townsville. Unfortunately he was less than honest with them and soon he is trying to take over the city with the help of apes and monkeys that he has treated with Ingredient X. This leads to the girls being hated even more. If they are to be loved again they will have to defeat Jojo, now calling himself Mojo Jojo. While this film is clearly going to appeal most to fans of the series it isn't necessary to have watched the show to enjoy this. The introduction of the girls is handled well and fairly quickly. Once that is done the action quickly starts and once it has started it barely lets up until the end. This action provides both laughs and excitement in equal measure. The story is solid and nicely fills the seventy three minute run time without the need to shoehorn all the characters of the series into the action. Mojo Jojo was the 'main villain' of the show so it was good to see him take the villainous lead here; it was also fun to see his origins. The animation clearly isn't of Disney standard but to my mind it was essential that it kept the look of the TV series rather than trying to 'improve' it. There are plenty of references to other films which older viewers should enjoy without detracting from the enjoyment of those who don't get the references... I'm sure I missed some! Overall I'd certainly recommend this to fans of the series whatever their age; I suspect it can also be enjoyed by people who haven't watched the Powerpuff Girls before. 2b1af7f3a8
