The filming of Ram-Leela began in 2007 at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. Bhansali had the first look of the film's title sequence, which featured the logo of the Hindi film magazine Filmfare. The title was designed by film editor Sanjeev Yadav, and the scene featured Padukone in a 1940s French set.[29] The title of the film was based on the Gujarati language phrase, Ram chalo leela (lit. Ram come and play; or Ram come, let's play). It was suggested by Bhansali's wife, and Padukone, to be changed in Gujarati to Ram-Leela.[30]
The film was shot at various locations in India, including Ooty, Mussoorie, Shillong, Kodaikanal, Bangalore, Lonavala, Pattadakal, and Thiruvannamalai, using 35 mm film stock. Bhansali said that he wanted to shoot the film in colour to capture the feeling of Venice.[30] For the first time in India, a colour filter was used in black and white films in Hindi cinema.[31] The black and white scenes were later digitally converted to colour.
Filming began in the region called Shekhawati, in Rajasthan, India, from October 2, 2007, to October 14, 2007, with the working title of Rajasthan Rama Jatra.[29] Bhansali decided to shoot the entire film in a single location, such as a Rajput palace, to enable him to maintain a high production value.[20] After the first few weeks, Bhansali found that shooting on the back lot of a palace was much more difficult and time consuming than he had anticipated.[20] According to Bhansali, the working title of Rajasthan Rama Jatra was given to him by his son, Rahul, who was not a fan of the title of Ram-Leela.[20] Bhansali was displeased with the title of the film, as it was too similar to the name of the 1983 Hindi film Rama.[20] The director held a title contest to find a new name for the film; Bhansali eventually settled on the title Ram-Leela, after which he decided that the film should not be delayed any further.[20]
ABCD premiered across India in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.[10] The film was released in the United States on 2 June 2013.[11][12] As per the Bollywood trade website Box Office India, with around 1.50 billion viewers,[13] the film grossed 45.11 million in its first week. 827ec27edc
